The Competence Centre for Nutrition (KErn) pools knowledge about nutrition in Bavaria and develops information materials for various target groups, among other things. It is part of the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry. The KErn commissioned us to design and produce four learning stations on the topic of nutrition in times of climate change. The learning stations are aimed at pupils in grades 6 to 8s of Bavarian secondary schools and grammar schools.
Within two school hours, the pupils should develop an awareness of climate-friendly nutrition by working independently on the learning stations in small groups and recognise the connections between the topic modules. Climate-friendly nutrition is considered from the socio-economic, cultural, health and ecological dimensions. This includes a basic understanding of terms such as regional, seasonal and organic. By working through the learning stations, the pupils’ self-competence should be strengthened. The various topic modules should be presented in an age-appropriate and varied way. This includes the functionality of the learning stations, the design and the approach to the students.
After we have dealt intensively with the topic, we develop a rough concept for each learning station on the given topics. To do this, we get the pedagogical support of two teachers. It is important to us that the pupils are enabled to complete the learning stations independently with the help of brief instructions. For the teachers, there is a handbook with further information and tips on practical implementation.
In refining the concept, we are designing a wooden learning box. The individual learning stations are developed in the form of didactic games that are stored in this box. The learning boxes must be easy to transport and quick and easy to set up and put away.
When defining the design, we visualise the project goal once again and ask ourselves: How must the design look in order to achieve this goal? Key terms are: young and fresh, dynamic and positive, playful and methodical, gender-inclusive, target group-oriented. The colours used are bright and strong, supported by secondary colours in pastel shades. Each learning station has its own colour scheme. The individual materials can therefore be easily assigned to the corresponding learning station.
We have the learning box manufactured according to our specifications by a charitable organisation for people in social exclusion and housing shortage. We manufacture the inlay of the wooden box, which holds the individual utensils and keeps them in place during transport, in our own workshop. We test the prototype with a group of pupils. The enthusiasm is great. The test gives us valuable insights that we incorporate into the final product.

“Our specifications were not easy, but the VISUELL team managed to win us over with their analogue interactive learning box. Right from the start, the collaboration was a partnership of equals with a common goal.
The schools have only given us positive feedback – both about the content and the analogue wooden learning box!”Dr Christiane Brunner
