We are developing freestanding information units for the seven UNESCO World Heritage sites in Baden-Württemberg, which will be installed outdoors. They make the cultural heritage visible and accessible, encourage interaction and raise awareness of the value of these monuments.
Our design combines information panels with sturdy benches, positioned at an open angle to one another and, with seat lengths of 175 cm and 295 cm, offering ample space to linger. The concept aims to enable visitors to engage with the content at their leisure and to take in the atmosphere of the World Heritage site.
The panels feature information and images on the front and large-format, eye-catching photographs on the back. The multilingual texts – in German, English and French – are presented with equal visual prominence. They are distinguished by language-specific typefaces and different positioning. The design follows the corporate design guidelines of the umbrella brand ‘Denkmale Baden-Württemberg’. QR codes provide additional digital information and offer deeper insights into other World Heritage sites in Baden-Württemberg.
A particular challenge lies in the accessible design: font sizes, line spacing, contrasts and colours are checked for optimal readability and adjusted accordingly. It is also important to create an inclusive environment for all visitors. The seating is designed to be easily accessible for people with reduced mobility. People with and without wheelchairs can communicate with one another at eye level.
The selection of materials is made in consultation with the Ministry and the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments. Powder-coated steel and oak guarantee durability and resistance to weathering and vandalism. The benches are anchored on site by the relevant local building authorities in accordance with our technical drawings and instructions.
