Calendar 2020 | Summm

We affectionately call it the mammoth project, or the project where nothing really went smoothly. And when we say nothing really went smoothly, we mean it. But let’s start at the beginning:
What we now hold in our hands, after more than 3 months of planning, conceptualisation, design and printing, is our wonderfully buzzing 2020 calendar on the theme of “bees”. A training project by Johannes and me. Over the past few months, we have immersed ourselves completely in the world of bees, collecting fascinating facts about these little buzzing creatures and seeing them in action during our visit to a beekeeper at the very beginning of the project. We have compiled our most exciting, curious and fascinating findings in graphics and texts to draw more attention to bees. Above all, we have put a lot of heart and soul, attention to detail and countless hours of deliberation, rejection and sometimes despair into this project. Admittedly, we didn’t make it particularly easy for ourselves. A square calendar book, divided in the middle, hand-bound with black and yellow dyed paper from England, and that’s just for the upper half. Added to this is a Swiss brochure, different paper weights and the associated calculation of the number of natural white pages for the lower bundle, not to mention the laser engraving on the cover and the difficulty of printing white on black. Phew, that’s quite a lot, isn’t it? Nevertheless, it is a project we are particularly proud of, because whether it was the editorial at the beginning, the graphics and texts on the inside pages, or the appearance of the laser engraving on the cover – we were involved in all decisions from start to finish and were responsible for our project right up to the final print approval.
We learned a lot in the process, such as that you should never assume that the grain direction of paper is completely irrelevant for such a project, or that stored sheets of paper are always flawless and that everything is a done deal after printing – spoiler alert – that is clearly and definitely not the case :)
Above all, however, this calendar book shows that with teamwork and the belief that a wonderful product can be created, even the nastiest hurdles can be overcome. We are also grateful to the helpers from the VISUELL team, because whether it was text, typography, minor or even medium-sized crises and problems, there was always someone at our side to support us.
Now we are looking forward to a buzzing yeahr 2020!
